Since 2016, the Circle of Excellence awards have recognized and highlighted GLS employees who have made a significant contribution to the company and go above and beyond for our customers. Our 2018 winners and their guests were welcomed in sunny Florida to celebrate their achievement. In this Q&A series, we highlight some of their experiences.

Claude Julien
Claude Julien

Claude’s journey with GLS began in January 1993 in Northern Ontario. Over his first year, he gained experience from every angle of the company working in sales, dispatch, customer service, as a forklift operator and driving for both the freight and parcel businesses. Since 1994, Claude has been based in Ottawa as a Linehaul Driver.

"I want to say thank you to all the people that nominated me, to Stephanie Gingras and all those behind the scene who organized everything with such kindness."

What do you enjoy the most about your job each day?
I love being behind the wheel ensuring the transportation of goods is completed! I also enjoy the feeling of being part of this big family and knowing I am appreciated for my work.

In your opinion, what contributes to your success at GLS?
My passion and hard work. I share GLS’s vision and always provide good customer service.

What are some of the things you enjoy doing outside of work?
Spending time with my 3 sons. I also like having time to travel and working on my cars.

What was the highlight of your 2018 Circle of Excellence experience?
To share my passion for GLS with others who have the same dedication and pride, but most of all the kindness of our President, Rick Barnes along with Nicolas Simard and both their wives. They brought so much happiness and respect to both me and my son, Jean, which we will remember for the rest of our lives.

Sylvain Migneault
Sylvain Migneault

It’s been 14 years since Sylvain was given the chance work out of the Chambly terminal as a Supervisor after 5 years on the road as a day and night driver for GLS. This is no easy task with the unpredictable situations that may arise each day, but Sylvain always rises to the challenge and remains a key player for the team in Chambly.

"I feel respected and appreciated. I am encouraged to express my ideas to help the company grow."

What are some of your responsibilities at GLS?
Supervising the drivers’ routes, ensuring proper functionality of both tractors and trailers, and dealing with unpredictable situations are part of my day-to-day tasks. I am also responsible for hiring new drivers and enforcing the laws of transportation.

What do you enjoy most about your job each day?
Taking on challenges! Each day we need to make quick decisions as we deal with the unknown. We need to become more efficient than we were the previous day by learning from our experiences.

In your opinion, what do you think contributes to your success at GLS?
Knowing how to communicate and work as a team. I make myself available when my team needs me and help make sure everyone feels a sense of belonging, we really are a big family.

What was the highlight of your 2018 Circle of Excellence experience?
Being a recipient was the true highlight since I was not even aware that anyone had nominated me for the award. I really enjoyed the warm welcome from Mr. Barnes and Mr. Simard followed by the stories of each of my fellow recipients.

Ceri Wolstencroft
Ceri Wolstencroft

Throughout Ceri’s five years at GLS she has excelled rapidly across many positions. She began her career as a receptionist in our Brampton terminal, moving on to the appointment desk, followed by an administrative role and then transferred to Hamilton for five months to help open the terminal. Upon returning to Brampton, she took on an operational support role and most recently transferred into our Quality department.

"I am constantly looking for something new to learn or share with my fellow employees. Hard work and dedication to my job and GLS brings success."

What does your new role in GLS’s Quality Department entail?
I am responsible for creating processes and work instructions in addition to working with the terminals in Ontario to prepare for their Quality Assurance Audits. Once the audits are complete, I offer support to the terminals to help correct the findings.

What makes you proud to work for GLS?
Everything! The people, especially the family dynamic, which shows each day when you arrive to work to 100 hellos. Watching GLS grow and morph into the company it is today makes the idea of GLS’s future very exciting. I am proud to be a part of this family.

Describe your Circle of Excellence experience in three words:
Magical. Incredible. Appreciated.

What was the highlight of your 2018 Circle of Excellence experience?
Definitely the awards ceremony. Hearing the stories from so many others that love their job as much as I do was amazing. The time and energy put into the night really shows - Rick and Nic make a great team! The feeling of being recognized and appreciated in such an extravagant way makes me want to push harder and become a yearly winner!
